There are many people would love to design computer games for a living, but how can this really be achieved? Experience is hard to come by, unless you've designed your own computer games before. Here's some advice to help you get into the games sector.

It's hard to outline a particular qualification which prepares a candidate for a career in game design. Candidates from all types of academic backgrounds: English, Physics, Product Design, Scriptwriting and even Biology. Perhaps a passion for games is more important than any academic qualification.

A games designer could spend his or her time doing all manner of different things, from finding out the top speed of a particular car to how difficult it is to land a helicopter on a hovercraft. Above all, games designers have to be able to imagine, understand and communicate information effectively, both in writing and verbally. To be a great games designer, you should play lots of computer games, watch lots of films and read lots of books, comics and poems.

To get a job in this industry, you need to be really passionate about games. Many employers will demand experienced designers, but there is always room for passionate candidates who haven't worked in the games industry previously.

Be sure to write your CV to specification, by making clear your enthusiasm for getting into the games industry. Emphasise anything you've done which is relevant to game design and shows your dedication.

The hobbies and interests section also presents a great opportunity to show your enthusiasm for game design. Be specific about your gaming interests and be prepared to fully discuss in interview anything you make reference to on your CV.

Don't be anxious about using agencies. An agency with a good reputation in the games industry is best. A good agency will know just which companies are looking for candidates like you. One call to an agency and they will be contacting many more games companies in the UK. Agencies are invaluable. They look at CVs every day and know what interviewers are looking for in candidates and their CVs. Ask for their advice, be open and honest. The agency works on your behalf; don't be scared of them.

It can be really tough to break into the gaming industry, but once you have, there is a wealth of great jobs for people who are passionate and enthusiastic about games. Take a leap of faith. Write a new CV. See if you can become a games designer today.
